Structuring faculty-led immersions for lasting impact: The power of intentionality, critical reflection, and accompaniment
Immersion learning experiences in the local or global community can profoundly impact students’ worldview and how they see themselves as future leaders. These engaging experiences push students to examine their bias and vulnerabilities in real-world situations. Yet, without intentional preparation, faculty support, and a structured debriefing process, such experiences can fall short of the intended purposes, reinforce stereotypes, or oversimplify complex issues.
Join CUMU’s 2025 Holland Scholar Dr. Katie Clark, who has championed faculty-led immersion experiences for students at the Augsburg University’s Health Commons for close to two decades. Dr. Clark will provide insights and reflections on how these learning moments can have lasting impacts for the students, faculty, campuses, and communities.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Katie Clark, DNP serves as executive director of the Augsburg Health Commons, a network of health-focused drop-in centers that foster community connections and advance health for all. Dr. Clark is a 2025 Fellow of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing (ELAN) program, serves as a volunteer to help AACN develop the new Ecosystem of Excellence in Academic Nursing Toolkit, and was selected by the Minnesota Association of Registered Nurses as their 2025 fellow to the National American Nurses’ Advocacy Institute (AACN). She also serves on multiple university committees and received Augsburg University’s 2021 Distinguished Contributions to Service Award. Clark was recently named the 2025 recipient of the Barbara Holland Scholar-Administrator Award.
