Fifty-three member institutions of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) have received the 2026 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, a national recognition of institutional commitment to community-engaged teaching, research, and partnerships.

CUMU members receiving the 2026 classification reflect the central role that urban and metropolitan campuses play in advancing community well-being, economic opportunity, and student success in cities and regions across the country.

“We congratulate our member campuses on earning the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification — a recognition that affirms their sustained commitment to building meaningful partnerships and addressing the most pressing needs of their cities and regions. This designation reflects the centrality of community impact and reciprocal engagement to CUMU’s mission,” said Valerie Holton, CEO, Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities.

The Carnegie Community Engagement Classification is awarded through an elective process that requires institutions to provide extensive evidence of how engagement is embedded in their mission, culture, leadership, and practices. The designation highlights institutions that prioritize mutually beneficial partnerships and recognize community engagement as a core institutional value.
