CUMU PRESIDENTIAL PERSPECTIVES
Kwantlen Polytechnic University: a new kind of university
David W. Atkinson
President & Vice Chancellor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University
Perhaps the most telling feature of Kwantlen Polytechnic University is that it is different, beginning as it did as a community college over thirty years ago only to change to being a university college offering both college and university programming, and then finally to a polytechnic university with a mandate to off applied, career-focused undergraduate and graduate programs. As a university, however, it continues to operate as a dual sector institution offering programs traditionally found at community colleges and technical schools, even as it aggressively pursues its new role as a university with a mandate to develop a comprehensive range of degree programs.

Syracuse, NY, USA
From its founding in 1870, Syracuse University has been the embodiment of Scholarship in Action—education that transcends traditional boundaries through a combination of innovative thinking, daring choices and entrepreneurial attitude. Their iconic campus is nestled amongst the rolling hills of Central New York—itself a crucible of historic change and progress. Building on that foundation, SU continues to create opportunities for students and faculty to push limits, build pathways, and make connections that lead to new discoveries and transformational change.

NERCHE Announces the 2010 Ernest A. Lynton Award Winner
The annual Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty recognizes a faculty member who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement. The award is designated for either pre-tenure faculty at tenure-granting campuses or early career faculty (i.e., within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts. This year, we are pleased to present the Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty to N. Eugene Walls, Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Denver. Reflecting on his engaged scholarship, Eugene writes: “In order to qualify as truly being community engaged research, practice, and education, our endeavors must go beyond their applied nature to embody an approach that values the public good, trusts the wisdom of communities, and commits to social justice…. It is only in the values that are reflected in how the work is done, and the value of the outcomes of that work to the community that work can come to be called community-engaged work.” [read more]
